50 Cent went home in a hat after his “Street Fighter” hairline left him weighing a rescue plan that involved stubble and Just for Men.
The rapper told Extra about the look at the film’s Los Angeles premiere. He put in hours at the gym to play Balrog, but his hairline was a problem weight training couldn’t fix.
“You know, that was a problem. Like I had I’m like, yo, so what do I do? Like I had no facial hair. And my hairline was all over the place. And I’m like, so what do I do?” he said.
The proposed fix called for a few days of stubble and some dye. Even Balrog apparently needed backup.
“And they’re like, well, maybe you don’t maybe you don’t shave it for the last 3 days and you’ll have a little stubble left. And then you can like get you some Just for Men and darken in the areas. And maybe it look like you got a light Caesar. Let’s see if we can fix it.”
The pitch was a light Caesar. The exit strategy was headwear.
“You know, like but I I went home with a hat on. That hairline was crazy.”
That hat fit his earlier verdict on the look. Last week on TODAY, he had shot down the idea of wearing the character’s hair in real life. Balrog’s style had failed the off-duty test.
The rest of the role took a lot more than a trip to the costume room. 50 Cent said his memories of Balrog had pushed him to work.
“I remember what the character looked like. And it put all kind of pressure on me.”
He said he had trained for almost three hours a day and used cryotherapy as part of his recovery routine.
“I never worked out that much on a regular you know, a regular day. You need a special motivation and reasoning to to train that hard.”
His ties to the game went back well before the film. He recalled playing “Street Fighter” and “Out Run” at a local Chinese food store, where finding enough change to keep playing was a task in itself.
He also worked on how Balrog threw punches. That meant shaping his punches around the character instead of just getting back into boxing.
“Street Fighter” was scheduled to open in theaters on October 16.
