50 Cent Slams The Door On Courtney Kemp As “Power” Creator Hits Back

50 Cent ruled out working with Courtney Kemp again, and the “Power” creator pushed back on his claims about their work.

“I don’t look forward to working with her ever again,” he told Variety in a new interview.

The rapper felt Kemp had lost sight of his role in selling the show. He pointed to the music he made for pitches and his work to get the series off the ground.

Kemp challenged his budget claims and his grasp of how the show was run. She also denied that she had played down his part in its success.

“I have never once understated his importance in the genesis of ‘Power,'” she said.

Their roles were clear when Starz first picked up the show in 2013. Kemp created the crime drama and took on the job of showrunner, while 50 joined as an executive producer. The network’s first order was for eight episodes.

That grew into a much bigger deal. The first “Power” ran for six seasons and ended in 2020. Its spinoffs kept key characters on screen as the show branched out into a string of new stories.

Music was part of the show’s sound from the start. 50’s “Big Rich Town” video, with Joe, came out in April 2014 before the show’s debut. Starz also offered the video as a first-season bonus.

In 2021, Kemp signed a Netflix deal and passed the day-to-day work on “Power Book II: Ghost” to Brett Mahoney before its third season. She kept an executive producer role in the “Power” shows.

Her move to a new home for her own shows came years before this latest clash over credit. Both Kemp and 50 still had executive producer credits for that third season of “Ghost.”

Kemp went on to create “Nemesis” with Tani Marole. The eight-part Netflix crime drama came out in May and followed a Los Angeles cop and a master thief. It was the first show from her deal with the streamer. Netflix ordered a second season in June.

The work she and 50 built together also found a new home. A Netflix rights deal included U.S. rights to the original “Power” and international rights to its first four series, with the rollout set for November.

Kemp said she had moved on in her career and hoped 50’s “Street Fighter” success would help him do the same.
