Netflix has renewed “A Different World” for a second season following the revival’s successful return to Hillman College and its introduction of a new generation navigating HBCU life.
The comedy brings the beloved world of the original NBC series into the present day with Deborah played by Maleah Joi Moon at the center of the story. Deborah is the youngest child of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, giving the revival a direct family connection to two of the franchise’s most recognizable characters.
Season 2 will move Deborah and her classmates into their sophomore year after summers that apparently changed more than a few perspectives.
According to the official logline, “After transformative summers, Deborah and her Hillman classmates return to campus for sophomore year with a ‘New Year, New Me’ attitude, only to find themselves faced with past decisions, uncertain futures, new loves and friendships, and deeper questions of purpose… all while, of course, getting themselves into a whole lot of new mess.”
Moon leads an ensemble that includes Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece and Chibuikem Uche.
The revival has also leaned heavily into its Hillman lineage without simply turning the series into a nostalgia exercise. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison returned as Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. Other performers from the original series who reprised their roles include Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Ajai Sanders and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Behind the scenes, the connection runs just as deep.
Felicia Pride created the new “A Different World” and serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer. Debbie Allen returned as a director and executive producer after directing 83 episodes of the original series.
“It’s so validating to be bolstered by our amazing audience,” Pride said in a statement. “We are beyond excited to return to Hillman and continue to tell meaningful and heartfelt stories that resonate across generations. I am thrilled for our brilliant cast and our hard-working crew.”
The original “A Different World” aired on NBC from 1987 to 1993 and became one of television’s most recognizable depictions of life at a historically Black college. The revival now has an opportunity to extend that legacy through characters facing a different cultural moment while remaining rooted in Hillman.
