AKA Had Fresh Injuries After Anele Tembe’s Death, Doctor Told Inquest

AKA had fresh scratches and bruises after his fiancee, Anele Tembe, died. A Cape Town court heard the claim on Tuesday (October 20).

A doctor saw the rapper soon after her death, TimesLIVE reported. He found marks on AKA’s left forearm, right leg, right knee and neck. He said they appeared to come from sharp and blunt objects.

“The physical examination was done on the patient after exposing his full body. He had many fresh scratch marks,” the doctor said.

AKA worked with the doctor but seemed stressed and agitated, the court heard. The doctor said he could not get a clear account of how the rapper got the bruises.

Tembe, 22, died in a fall from the Pepperclub Hotel’s 10th floor on April 11, 2021. She had been staying there with AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes.

The doctor spoke after the rapper’s father, Tony Forbes, raised doubts over claims about the marks. He asked why those claims had not been put to the test.

Forbes told Eyewitness News that Monday’s claims about scratches on AKA’s back did not match the medical report. He said the report did not list scratches there. He asked why no one had questioned that gap between the two accounts.

Those were the father’s claims, not court findings about how she died.

Forensic analyst Jeremy Philander told the court on Monday that he had traced the fall. He found that Tembe could have jumped or been pushed. His work did not settle which had happened. In his view, a slip and fall did not fit the physical evidence.

The state first chose not to file charges after it reviewed police forensic reports. It later sent the docket back for more work. The case then reached an inquest. That is where the court looks at how a person died and whether anyone can be held responsible.

This Cape Town case is not part of the Durban murder trial over AKA’s own death. Gunmen killed the rapper and his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane in February 2023.

SABC News said the court was set to hear from at least seven witnesses this week.
