Ayesha Curry Addresses Viral Movie Kiss As Steph Backs Lead Role

Ayesha Curry addressed the online reaction to an on-screen kiss after a clip from her new Roku movie spread across social media on its premiere day.

The scene comes from Second Chance Holiday, the holiday romantic comedy that gave Curry her first feature-film lead. She plays Chelsey, a dating expert who keeps getting dumped during the holidays and agrees to pose as a couple with her high school flame, played by Matthew Daddario.

Some viewers treated the scripted kiss like a referendum on Curry’s marriage to Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry.

The reaction ignored both the job and the public support Steph gave the project months before its release. When the movie was announced, he celebrated his wife as “My Leading Lady” in an Instagram Story.

Ayesha also made clear why the genre appealed to her. “There’s something truly magical about holiday rom-coms,” she said when Roku announced the film in July. “They invite you into these charming, cozy worlds where anything feels possible.”

The movie is a bigger acting step for Curry, but it is not her first time on screen. Her credits include the 2024 Netflix film Irish Wish, the television series About Last Night and hosting work on food and competition shows. Second Chance Holiday puts her at the center of a scripted feature rather than in a supporting role or as herself.

The Roku production was directed by Maxwell McGuire from a script by Erin Muroski. The supporting cast includes Jasmine Vega, Arcade Riley, Sergio Di Zio and Melissa De Sousa. Roku released the film Thursday, November 5, alongside another original holiday movie, The Holiday Spark.

The viral argument also landed only a few months after Steph and Ayesha marked 15 years of marriage. The couple married in 2011 and share four children. Their anniversary celebration in July was deliberately low-key, according to People.

Ayesha’s response did not turn the scene into anything more than what it was: part of a fictional romance. Second Chance Holiday is now streaming on The Roku Channel, with the attention around the kiss arriving the same day as her first leading film role.
