Bun B credited Drake with bringing fresh money and listeners to “Get Throwed” after the Houston classic landed inside “Solar Eclipse.”
The UGK veteran described two payoffs in a new Rolling Stone interview: income from the sample and a rise in streams for his own recording as fans went looking for the source.
“Not only is there revenue from having your song attached to a Drake song, but also, people rediscover the original record,” Bun B said.
Drake and Don Toliver reworked Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” for their collaboration, drawing on the bass line from “Get Throwed.”
Drake had already sampled Bun B’s song on “N 2 Deep” in 2021, so the new placement extended a connection between their catalogs.
Their relationship began long before that sample. Bun B joined Drake and Lil Wayne on “Uptown” from the 2009 mixtape So Far Gone, giving the young Toronto artist a major Southern co-sign.
The pair also shared stages in Houston. Drake later appeared on Bun B’s Trill OG.
In a 2010 interview, Bun B explained that he recognized the younger rapper’s drive and saw a parallel with UGK’s blend of hard-edged stories and melodic hooks.
“Get Throwed” came from Bun B’s first solo album, Trill, released in 2005. Mr. Lee produced the track, which brought together Pimp C, Jay-Z, Jeezy and Z-Ro alongside Bun B.
That solo chapter grew out of Pimp C’s imprisonment. Bun B later told Jesse Thorn on “Bullseye” that he had suddenly taken on jobs his partner usually handled, from choosing beats to sequencing the album. Keeping UGK moving meant learning how to carry the whole recording process himself.
Two decades later, that work reached another audience through a song that entered the Hot 100 at No. 5. “Solar Eclipse” arrived on streaming services October 2 after its earlier appearance in Drake’s “FOMO” film.
Bun B also backed Drake’s ability to withstand the backlash surrounding his feud with Kendrick Lamar. He praised the rapper’s persistence and argued that his audience had remained strong despite people counting him out.
Bun B said he planned to release new music in 2027.
