Champion standout Jelani Harvey earns place at prestigious Choate Rosemary Hall

KINGSTON, Jamaica — At just 17 years old, Jelani Harvey is already showing that success on the football field and in the classroom can go hand in hand. The talented defensive midfielder, who has developed through the ranks of Harbour View FC and emerged as a standout student-athlete at Campion College, is preparing for another major chapter in his young career after being selected to attend prestigious boarding school Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut this fall, where he will join the Class of 2028. Harvey’s football journey began at age nine when he represented Harbour View’s Under-10 team at the Bandolino Cup in Italy from May 3-7, 2018. Clyde Jureidini, general manager of Harbour View said Harvey’s early international experience “was the beginning of a development path that has taken him through virtually every age group at the club”. “He progressed through the KSAFA Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 programmes while representing Harbour View at successive editions of the Reggae Cup. Along the way, Harvey has been part of teams that tasted success in several islandwide academy tournaments, building a resume that now includes both domestic and international experience,” Jureidini explained. His development took another major step in 2024 when he travelled to Sweden to compete in the prestigious Gothia Cup at the Under-16 level. The following summer, he was again exposed to international competition, helping Harbour View on a successful three-match tour of New York and Connecticut. Harvey’s performances have also brought him to the attention of the national programme. He has received invitations to Jamaica's Under-15 and Under-17 camps, providing further opportunities to test himself against some of the country's best young players. Despite his age, Harvey has also moved into senior football territory. He was selected for a Jamaica Premier League match-day squad with Harbour View at just 16, giving him an early taste of the demands and intensity of top-flight football. His list of achievements at youth level is equally impressive. Harvey has been part of teams winning the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) All-Island Championship with KSAFA Under-15, while also celebrating KSAFA Under-17 and Under-20 titles. His international résumé includes a Weston Cup title. But while football has occupied a major part of his life, Harvey has also excelled academically. At Campion College, he produced straight Grade Ones in all nine of his Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subjects. That combination of academic excellence and football development has positioned Harvey as a promising example of the modern student-athlete—one capable of pursuing sporting ambitions without sacrificing educational goals. His selection to Choate Rosemary Hall now provides another opportunity to develop both areas of his life. The Connecticut school will offer Harvey a new environment in which to continue his education while further developing his football abilities and gaining valuable experience away from home. For a player who began his journey with Harbour View at nine, travelled to Italy as a youngster, progressed through Jamaica's youth football system, competed in Sweden and North America, and earned senior Premier League exposure before his 17th birthday, the next stage promises to be another important one. Harvey's story is still being written, but the early chapters suggest a young man determined to make the most of opportunities both on and off the field.
