Chris Rock Says He Quit Porn While Owning Marriage Failures

Chris Rock is taking a hard look at the habits and failures that followed him long after he became one of comedy’s biggest stars.

In a candid GQ interview, Rock admitted he spent years watching pornography and said he stopped five or six years ago.

He also connected that period to choices that helped wreck his marriage to Malaak Compton-Rock.

“I was not a great husband,” Rock said.

The admission was not framed as a victory lap. Rock described quitting pornography as one part of a longer attempt to understand his behavior and take responsibility for the damage it caused.

He and Compton-Rock married in 1996. Their divorce was finalized in 2016 after roughly two decades together, and Rock later acknowledged infidelity during the marriage.

“I haven’t watched porn in five, six years,” he said.

Rock also discussed the therapy that has become a regular part of his life. The comedian first spoke publicly about intensive treatment and a diagnosis of nonverbal learning disorder years ago.

The condition can make it difficult to read nonverbal signals, social cues and other information that is not communicated directly.

AllHipHop previously reported that Rock was spending seven hours a week in therapy while working through childhood trauma, relationships and the way his diagnosis affected his interactions with other people.

That work has continued. Rock made clear that therapy is not something he considers finished just because he now has language for some of his struggles.

“You never come out. It’s an ongoing thing,” he said.

The unusually personal interview arrives as Chris Rock returns to filmmaking with Misty Green, a movie he wrote and directed. The comedy centers on a troubled actress whose former mentor casts her in a career-saving role, forcing both characters to deal with an old relationship and years of unresolved tension.

The project puts Rock behind the camera again while his own comments reveal a man still examining what happened offstage. He did not excuse the choices that damaged his marriage or claim therapy erased them. Instead, he described recovery as continuing work, even after fame, divorce and public embarrassment forced those failures into view.
