Colin Kaepernick Earns Prestigious Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Honor

Colin Kaepernick turned protest and personal sacrifice into a civil rights platform that will be honored in Muhammad Ali’s hometown when the former NFL quarterback receives the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian of the Year Award.

The Muhammad Ali Center has named Kaepernick the recipient of its prestigious humanitarian honor, recognizing his commitment to racial justice and underserved communities. The award will be presented during the 13th annual Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards on Nov. 7 in Louisville, Kentucky.

The selection connects two prominent athletes whose careers extended far beyond sports.

Kaepernick became an international figure after protesting racial injustice while playing quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. His activism eventually expanded beyond football into broader efforts focused on equality and community empowerment.

Ali famously used his enormous celebrity to speak publicly about race, religion, war and human rights, sometimes at substantial cost to his boxing career. The Muhammad Ali Center sees a connection between that history and Kaepernick’s willingness to accept consequences while maintaining his convictions.

Lonnie Ali, co-founder of the Muhammad Ali Center and Ali’s widow, directly addressed that parallel while announcing Kaepernick’s selection.

“Colin was chosen for his courage to stand against racial injustice and his unwavering commitment to empowering underserved communities,” said Ali in an official press release. “Like Muhammad, Colin has used his platform to advocate for equality, human dignity, and social change, even when doing so came at significant personal and professional cost.”

Kaepernick’s recognition also adds another chapter to a public life that has evolved considerably since his days behind center in San Francisco. The former quarterback has remained associated with civil rights advocacy while pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors.

For Kaepernick, receiving an award bearing Ali’s name carries an obligation beyond another honor for the trophy case.

“Receiving the Muhammad Ali Center’s Humanitarian of the Year Award is an incredible honor,” Kaepernick said in a statement. “Muhammad Ali lived with an uncommon courage to stand firmly in his convictions, even when doing so came at a great personal cost… To be recognized in his name is simultaneously humbling and a responsibility.”

That responsibility is particularly significant because Ali’s reputation was built on more than championship belts. His willingness to challenge powerful institutions became inseparable from his legacy.

Kaepernick now enters that conversation through an award specifically tied to humanitarian service rather than athletic achievement.

Years after his protests placed him at the center of a national debate, his actions are being recognized by an institution dedicated to preserving the principles Ali championed.
