Cops charged with unlawful wounding, assault following Indecom probes
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Two police constables have been charged in separate cases involving allegations of unlawful wounding and assault, following investigations by the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom). Constable Christonajae Ellis appeared before the Hanover Parish Court on October 20 to answer a charge of unlawful wounding stemming from an incident in Flint River, Hanover, on July 16, 2024. The complainant alleges that Ellis used his firearm to inflict an injury to his face, which required stitches. However, the constable maintains that he acted in self-defence. Both parties have been referred to the restorative justice system for mediation, while Ellis was bound over to return to court on December 8, 2026. In a separate matter, Constable Abian Wilson appeared before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on October 21, following a summons, to answer a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The charge stems from an incident involving a woman in Duhaney Park, Kingston 20, on December 22, 2024. According to allegations made by the complainant and eyewitnesses, Wilson pushed the woman, causing her to fall to the ground, lose consciousness and sustain injuries. Wilson has denied using force against the woman. The matter has also been referred for mediation and is scheduled to return to court on February 4, 2027. The latest charges bring to 22 the number of law enforcement officers charged in 2026 in connection with incidents investigated by Indecom. Of that number, 20 are members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), including one former constable, while the remaining two are correctional officers. The charges stem from investigations involving shootings and alleged assaults.
