Cyberattack on JETS exposes customer information; MultiLink and ACH networks unaffected
KINGSTON, Jamaica — JETS Limited, operator of Jamaica’s MultiLink Debit Card and Automated Clearing House (ACH) networks, confirmed that hackers may have accessed sensitive customer information after a cyberattack on part of its internal administrative systems. The company assured the public that neither the MultiLink nor ACH payment network was compromised, but said the breach may have exposed the names of some customers who received transfers through the ACH network, as well as debit card numbers contained in historical administrative files. JETS stressed that personal identification numbers (PINs), card verification values (CVVs) and card expiry dates were not exposed, as the company does not store that information. According to the company, in a recent statement, its cyber monitoring team detected suspicious activity within a limited section of its internal systems and immediately moved to shut down and isolate the affected administrative systems. A forensic investigation has since been launched with the assistance of specialist cybersecurity consultants to determine the full extent of the breach. The company said it has also implemented additional security measures, in collaboration with its member financial institutions, to protect customer information and maintain the integrity of Jamaica’s payment infrastructure. Customers are being urged to remain vigilant against potential fraud and phishing attempts and to contact their financial institutions if they receive unsolicited communications concerning their bank accounts or debit cards. JETS confirmed that the Bank of Jamaica, the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC), the police, cybersecurity experts and member financial institutions have been notified of the incident. The company acknowledged the growing frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks globally, noting that it has been strengthening its cybersecurity defences to address emerging threats. JETS said investigations into the breach remain ongoing and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Jamaica’s payment systems.
