David Banner Considers Giving Away “The God Box 2” For Free

David Banner is considering releasing his next album for free after receiving an overwhelming show of support directly from his fans.

The Mississippi rapper, producer, actor and activist discussed the possibility during a conversation with AllHipHop co-founder Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur in Richmond, Virginia. Banner explained that listeners have been voluntarily paying far more than expected for his new music, convincing him that a people-powered release strategy could work.

Banner recently returned with “Where You From?,” featuring T.I., Juicy J and Duke Deuce. The Southern posse cut serves as an introduction to his forthcoming project, The God Box 2, the sequel to his acclaimed 2017 album.

Through his official website, Banner has allowed listeners to choose how much they want to pay for the single while also offering two additional songs from the project. According to Banner, some supporters have paid as much as $150.

“I got a ‘pay what you want’ for the single, and then I put two songs off of the album,” Banner told AllHipHop. “People are giving me $150, $100, $75.”

The response has been so strong that Banner is now considering making the entire album available without a mandatory price.

“They’re really supporting in a way,” he continued. “It’s to the point where, if they continue like this, I’ll give that away for free, dog. I’m dead serious, bro. For the people.”

Banner’s comments suggest he is exploring a direct-to-consumer model built on voluntary support instead of relying exclusively on traditional sales and streaming platforms. While he did not formally announce that The God Box 2 will be free, he made it clear that continued financial support from listeners could make the move possible.

The veteran artist said the direct connection with fans has also given him a renewed sense of financial and creative freedom.

“I went to my bank account for the first time in a long time, and it felt good,” he said. “It was way more in there than I thought. I’m so grateful.”

The God Box 2 is shaping up to be a sprawling celebration of Hip-Hop, with Banner naming T.I., Juicy J, Duke Deuce, Method Man, Juvenile, T-Pain, E-40, Bun B, Young Dro, Conway The Machine, Westside Gunn, Benny The Butcher, Boosie Badazz, Akeem Ali and 2 Chainz among the contributors.

The project will also feature singers like Erica Campbell, Anthony Hamilton, Raheem DeVaughn, Eric Bellinger and legendary semi-singer Devin The Dude.

He said Big Daddy Kane delivered one of the most meaningful reactions after hearing the music.

“He said, ‘This is actually Southern Hip-Hop,’” Banner recalled. “‘It’s not a Southern dude trying to sound like he’s from New York. This is Southern Hip-Hop.’”

No official release date or final pricing model for The God Box 2 has been announced.
