Digicel warns of fraudulent J$15,000 National Heroes’ Day promotion
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Digicel Jamaica is warning the public about a fraudulent cash promotion circulating under the company’s name and brand, falsely offering J$15,000 to mark National Heroes’ Day. In a release on Saturday, the telecommunications company said it had no association with the promotion, describing it as fraudulent, unauthorised and misleading. Digicel Jamaica Chief Executive Officer Stephen Murad warned that the scheme could expose members of the public to financial loss and the theft of personal information, particularly those vulnerable to online scams. “It is deeply troubling that unscrupulous individuals would exploit an occasion of national pride to deceive fellow Jamaicans, putting their personal information, finances and security at risk,” Murad said. “We cannot allow the actions of these individuals to put more Jamaicans at risk. We urge everyone to remain vigilant, verify information through official channels and look out for one another, particularly our elderly and those less familiar with online scams. Protecting Jamaicans from fraud is a shared responsibility, and greater public awareness is one of our strongest defences,” he continued. Digicel Jamaica is urging members of the public not to click on suspicious links, disclose personal or financial information, or forward fraudulent messages. The company also reminded customers that legitimate promotions can be verified through its official website and verified social media channels. It said winners of active Digicel promotions will only be contacted by the company’s team from 876-619-5000. Anyone who receives the fraudulent communication or similar messages is encouraged to report them to the Jamaica Cyber Incident Response Team (JaCIRT) at jamaica.cirt@opm.gov.jm or (876) 578-5705. As Jamaica observes National Cybersecurity Awareness Month under the theme “One Nation, Cyber Strong”, Digicel Jamaica reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside relevant local authorities to combat fraudulent activity, strengthen public awareness and help protect Jamaicans from online scams.
