Doja Cat had a familiar partner for her hometown birthday show: Rico Nasty, who joined her to perform “Tia Tamera” at the Kia Forum on Thursday night.
Rico made a surprise appearance during the October 22 stop on Doja’s “Tour Ma Vie World Tour” in Inglewood, California. The two returned to a song they released together in 2019.
Amazon Music confirmed the guest spot in a statement shared with AllHipHop on Friday and posted a preview on its official YouTube account.
Doja had singled out the hometown date when Amazon announced the show in September.
“I’m playing The Forum the day after my birthday and I’m spending it onstage doing what I love most. That’s already special,” she said.
The choice of “Tia Tamera” took the show back to her debut album’s run. The song arrived in February 2019 ahead of the deluxe edition of Amala, with Rico as its guest. It followed “Mooo!,” the song and video that had brought Doja a wave of online attention the year before.
The track’s video paired the rappers in a bright, 1990s-inspired world. Director Roxana Baldovin drew on “Sister, Sister” and Nickelodeon’s “Double Dare,” giving their playful collaboration a game-show setting.
Rico later said the track worked because she hadn’t overthought it. In a 2022 Glamour interview, she recalled matching the cadence of Doja’s verse and treating the feature as a regular collaboration.
She also recalled enjoying the video shoot.
“That song was hella natural,” Rico said.
They had performed “Tia Tamera” together at Coachella in 2019, just months after the song came out. Doja brought Rico back for the track during her own Coachella set in 2022. Rico told Glamour that she had watched Doja cross over and was thrilled to get the invitation.
“Doja has features with the coolest people ever and she chose me. I felt very, very special,” Rico said.
The Forum reunion is set to reach viewers next week. Doja’s “Amazon Music Live” performance is scheduled for October 29 after “Thursday Night Football” on Amazon Music, Twitch and Prime Video.
Her episode will close the concert series’ fifth season, which runs four episodes.
