ROSEAU, Dominica – Eleven families received new homes at Canefield East on Friday under the government of Dominica’s housing programme. MMC Development Ltd partnered with local contractors to build 16 standalone housing units. Each unit has three bedrooms, two toilets and baths, a kitchen, a dining area, a laundry area and a porch. Eleven units are among 215 houses and apartments scheduled to be handed over in nine communities over the coming weeks, according to the government of Dominica press secretary.
Minister for housing and urban development Melissa Poponne-Skerrit said the Canefield East handover forms part of ongoing efforts to address housing needs across Dominica.
“A home is far more than just four walls. It’s your sanctuary,” the housing minister said. “Eleven families here, 53 people, will be moving into a new home, and coming in the next two months, 215 families across nine communities in Dominica will receive keys to their brand-new home.”
Poponne-Skerrit said the programme is intended to give more Dominicans access to secure housing, regardless of their circumstances: “This is about giving every Dominican, regardless of their circumstances, the opportunity to live well, with pride and security.”
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said the programme is particularly important for families who may not have the financial means to construct a home.
“Not every family can walk into a bank and qualify for a large mortgage. Not every mother can find the money to build a home on her own. Not every elderly person has children who can provide a comfortable house for them,” adding, “Our policy has always been to lift people up. Our mission has always been to improve the lives of ordinary people because we believe that government must stand with the people not only in words, but through action.”
The government will continue investing in housing to improve living conditions and provide greater security for families across Dominica, the prime minister said.
