Donald Trump wants artificial intelligence renamed, turning the fight over AI safety into a public branding campaign with three alternatives.
Trump said in a Saturday post shared online that the term fails to describe technology he views as more powerful than its current label.
“Many people think that the words ‘Artificial Intelligence’ are inaccurate, and very ineloquent, relative to AI, or Artificial Intelligence. A far more elegant and accurate description of this new phenomena would be Superior Intelligence (SI) or, Extreme Intelligence (EI) or, Supreme Intelligence (SI).”
He asked followers to vote on the best name for what he called an “ever growing ‘Revolution.’” As of Sunday, September 20, the poll had over 200,000 votes with “Superior Intelligence” leading.
The naming push follows rare agreement among major AI executives that frontier systems are advancing faster than safety measures can follow.
“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain.”
Amodei called for outside evaluators, industry coordination and international cooperation while allowing continued research instead of halting model training.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman backed that approach and said similar discussions were already happening inside his company.
“I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we’ve had at OpenAI in recent weeks.”
Trump answered by rejecting new restraints and arguing existing law gives the government enough power to address misconduct.
He later said “the only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT,” placing himself against the proposal.
Trump expanded that position Saturday by announcing an “AI Force” and promising a future AI “czar” without explaining its authority.
“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!”
Trump said existing criminal and civil laws could police harmful conduct while American AI development keeps moving.
