Drake pushed his Hot 100 record to 91 with “Solar Eclipse,” which gave Don Toliver his first Top 10 as a lead artist.
The duet entered at No. 5, Billboard reported. Toliver had reached that tier once before, as a guest alongside NAV on Internet Money and Gunna’s “Lemonade,” which peaked at No. 6 in November 2020.
Their new song drew 15.1 million U.S. streams, an airplay audience of 712,000 and 1,000 sales in its opening week.
That start follows a rollout that gave fans several ways to find the track. “Solar Eclipse” appeared in Drake’s FOMO film before its October 2 streaming release on HABIBTI (FOMO). His official YouTube channel added the standalone video October 6.
The expanded edition added four tracks, pairing “Solar Eclipse” with “Quebec,” “Classic PT2” and “Cold Shoulder.” Toliver also appears on “Cold Shoulder,” where Yebba joins the two artists.
The Hot 100 blends streams, radio play and sales. Its October 2 through October 8 tracking week includes both the song’s streaming debut and the video’s release.
The music reaches across genres, too.
“Solar Eclipse” draws from Ella Langley’s country song “Choosin’ Texas,” but Drake and Toliver put their own setting and sound around it. Drake’s chorus changes the original’s departing cowboy into a cowgirl, shifting the song from Langley’s perspective to his.
Pitchfork’s review traced the shift to Houston nightlife, with electric guitar beneath Toliver’s Auto-Tuned vocals. His verse also nods to his home county of Fort Bend, Texas.
Toliver released his fifth album, Octane, in January through Cactus Jack, Donnway & Co and Atlantic. Discussing that solo project with GQ, he described getting involved in production instead of simply choosing from beats sent to him.
“I EP’d this whole album, bro,” Toliver said. “It just helps me know where I’m going with the music.”
“Solar Eclipse” also opened atop Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot R&B Songs, giving Toliver his first No. 1 on each. It is Drake’s record 33rd leader on the former chart.
The new rankings are dated October 17, and Billboard will post the full charts Tuesday, October 13.
