Eminem is back. Or is that Slim Shady?
The Detroit delivery back into the spotlight Friday with “MADARA,” a new collaboration with Filipino-American rapper EZ Mil that combines Hip-Hop aggression with Japanese anime mythology.
The latest release from the Shady Records camp also features Tokyo rapper Hideyoshi and voice actor Neil Kaplan, best known for portraying the formidable Madara Uchiha in the English-language version of Naruto.
Rather than simply borrowing the popular anime character’s name, the musicians constructed a record around his menacing personality. The production combines somber piano notes with booming bass and restless percussion, creating a sinister backdrop for the lyrical assault.
Eminem sounds particularly energized, employing a vocal approach reminiscent of his earlier Slim Shady recordings. His performance also touches on censorship, racial privilege and previous rap disputes, bringing familiar subjects into another technically demanding verse.
EZ Mil refuses to disappear behind his famous collaborator.
The Philippines-born rapper switches between English and Japanese while incorporating references to anime and displaying the multilingual abilities that helped distinguish his early recordings.
Hideyoshi contributes to the international character of the track while Kaplan brings the fictional antagonist directly into the musical proceedings.
The collaboration represents another significant moment in the professional relationship between Eminem and EZ Mil, whose association began before the younger rapper signed with Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records in July 2023.
Their first official collaboration, “Realest,” appeared that August on EZ Mil’s DU4LI7Y: REDUX. The single reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Rap Digital Song Sales and R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales charts.
EZ Mil subsequently appeared on “Head Honcho” from Eminem’s chart-topping 2024 album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), delivering verses in English and Tagalog.
“MADARA” arrives after EZ Mil released 3RD WRLD VOL. 1 in July, a three-song project examining his Filipino heritage and personal ambitions.
That release included “2200,” named after the ZIP code of his hometown, Olongapo City. Dr. Dre mixed the track, further illustrating the involvement of the veteran production team in EZ Mil’s career.
A follow-up project, 3RD WRLD VOL. 2, is also expected, although an official release date has not been announced.
