Damon Dash spent years fighting attorney Christopher Brown in court, and now, in a shocking turn of events, Brown joined Everlasting Films in its $550,000 bid to win the mogul’s life-story rights and related intellectual property
Brown’s role became clear in an October 23 filing in Dash’s Florida bankruptcy case. The lawyer, who won his own defamation judgment against Dash and represented others who beat him in court, joined the notice naming the auction’s successful and backup bidders.
“Chris Brown, participating bidder with Everlasting, joins in the Notice of Successful Bidder and Back-Up Bidder,” the filing stated.
Brown had already pushed to sell Dash’s life rights. In August, AllHipHop reported that the trustee sought to sell Dash’s name, image and personal story, with Everlasting Films making the opening offer.
Brown’s latest filing confirmed him as a bidder.
The move put Brown on the other side of a fight Dash cited when explaining why he sought bankruptcy protection. During his September 16, 2025 appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” Damon Dash said the lawyer’s collection efforts had disrupted deals involving his family office.
“I filed because you know that guy Chris Brown has been suing me,” Dash said.
Their feud had become personal long before the bankruptcy.
A November 2019 deposition ended with police being called after Dash’s clash with Brown. Judge Robert Lehrburger later ordered Dash to pay $2,744.92 for the failed session.
Brown also sought to restrict Dash’s public attacks, arguing that his social media posts could affect potential jurors. In January 2020, Judge Lehrburger declined to rule on the gag-order request, telling the plaintiffs to file a motion with factual and legal support if they wanted to pursue it.
Brown’s own defamation case grew out of Dash’s public comments about him.
A Los Angeles federal jury found for the attorney on his defamation claim in December 2022. The judgment awarded Brown $50,000 against Damon Dash and another $50,000 against Dash’s company, Poppington, plus interest.
Author Edwyna Brooks won $300,000 in 2020 over Dash’s unauthorized sale and promotion of “Mafietta,” the film based on her books. Brown represented Brooks, and a federal appeals court upheld her award in July 2021.
Damon Dash had argued that he co-owned the film. The appeals court rejected that position, upholding the finding that Brooks hired him to provide services rather than share ownership.
Brown also represented filmmaker Josh Webber and Muddy Water Pictures in their “Dear Frank” dispute with Dash and Poppington.
After a trial over copyright infringement and defamation, the court entered an amended judgment in June 2022 for $705,400. Another $117,884.71 in attorney’s fees followed that September.
Webber also won a separate $4 million defamation judgment against Dash.
Collecting those awards became a fight in its own right.
A June 2025 court order said Webber and Muddy Water had received no proceeds from the auction of Dash’s Roc-A-Fella stake and that their judgment remained unpaid at that point.
Brown had made his approach to collecting from Dash clear years earlier. After Brooks won her case, he told AllHipHop, “We want every penny and I mean every penny.”
