Fire guts Chinese supermarket in Port Maria, one feared dead

ST MARY, Jamaica — Panic gripped Port Maria town Saturday morning after a fire of unknown origin gutted the popular Ling Fei Supermarket in the heart of the town.
Reports are that around 10:00 am, residents saw thick black smoke coming from the establishment which is operated by Chinese nationals. The Port Maria Fire Brigade was called to the scene and was assisted by a team from the National Water Commission (NWC) as firefighters battled to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.
Unconfirmed reports are that one Chinese national is suspected to have perished in the fire, while another worker sustained injuries in the blaze.
Observer Online understands that the Jamaica Fire Brigade are still on the scene.
