G Herbo says he is retiring from rap because the industry is “full of weirdos and snitches” after roughly 15 years.
The Chicago rapper announced the decision during an Instagram Live and made clear that music no longer feels like his priority.
“I took it to heights that I couldn’t imagine. I appreciate y’all, man. I love y’all,” Herbo said. “Maybe I’ll retire and come back like Mike. You never know how I’ll be feeling five years from now. Right now, man, I’m done with this rap shit.”
The announcement arrives while Herbo remains active musically and only months removed from an expanded edition of Lil Herb.
Apple Music released Lil Herb: Lil Heroin Edition in June with 35 tracks, extending the project that returned him to his original identity.
“I was just trying to tap into that stage and that era—just trying to find the hunger again,” Herbo told Apple Music. “I never do that. Once the music come out, I’ve always been on to the next. But listening to my old projects, watching old videos, it just got me in that mode.”
That report said Lil Herb reached No. 1 on Apple Music’s Hip-Hop Albums chart while “Went Legit” earned platinum certification.
Herbo first emerged as Lil Herb in Chicago’s drill movement before changing his name and building music around street survival, trauma and growth.
“When I was in the streets, just the stuff I was going through and seeing on a day-to-day basis – losing people around me and just seeing stuff like people getting hurt, shot… it inspired me to talk about it,” Herbo said in a 2017 interview. “I always knew how to rap a little bit, but I never took it seriously.”
Herbo told viewers he wants more time for his children, family and his future marriage to longtime partner Taina Williams.
He has also discussed acting and podcasting as possible moves, leaving open a public career outside recording if the retirement holds.
Herbo is still advertised for an October 3 concert at MVP Arena in Albany, New York, alongside DaBaby.
