Ginuwine is writing an autobiographical project with his son, after AI-generated YouTube shorts inspired the pair to tell his story themselves.
He told the Bronx Times he hopes his experiences can help people facing hard times. He plans to cover his career and his private life.
“I’m just trying to show people how you can still survive and continue on your journey to get better and do things differently,” Ginuwine said.
He was reluctant to call it his “life story” because he still has more living to do.
His account of grief goes back years. His father died in 1999 and his mother died of cancer in 2000. In an earlier interview, he described turning to drugs and alcohol while struggling with depression after those losses.
“I had one friend who intervened and begged me to get help,” he said. He recalled receiving counseling from his pastor and thinking about how his own children would feel if they lost him. He said he had felt alone in his grief and had initially resisted help.
The singer has also spoken publicly about asking for support. In September 2024, he marked two months sober in an Instagram post and urged others dealing with addiction to reach out.
“Don’t be ashamed reach out for help like I did bcz alot of times, well, most times, you need that support !!!!” he wrote.
He described the milestone as a major step, even if two months might seem brief to someone else. The post paired that personal update with a plea for others to keep trying.
Writing in his own voice has been part of his music, too. He told the Bronx Times he wrote about 90% of his catalog and discussed the lasting value of those songs as other artists sample them. He said he routinely approves those uses. He described songwriting as a way to express joy and pain, with listeners connecting because they have lived through similar feelings.
He also toured this year with Keith Sweat, Joe and Dru Hill.
Ginuwine will perform at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx on November 7 at 8 P.M., with Ro James as the special guest.
