Hype Williams To Receive ToruńCAMERIMAGE Music Video Award

Hype Williams will receive a ToruńCAMERIMAGE award for the music videos that helped shape Hip-Hop, with organizers saying he will collect the honor in person in Poland.

The festival announced its Award for Achievements in Music Video on October 28. The event runs November 7-14 in Toruń.

Missy Elliott’s work with Williams gives rap fans a clear link to that history.

In 2023, she looked back at their 1999 video for “She’s A B####”, a Timbaland-produced single from Da Real World. She credited her team and recalled that applying the stones around her eyes took more than two hours. Elliott also explained that her unusual movements came from how she imagined an alien would dance, rather than an effect added to the footage.

Williams has described his own approach in much simpler terms than those images might suggest. In a 2011 interview with Interview magazine, he said he listened to the song first, then worked out how pictures could support it. He treated a video as both a creative project and a way to help the record reach people.

Asked about Lil Wayne’s “6 Foot 7 Foot,” he credited Wayne with wanting to reference “Inception.” Williams said he wanted the clip to draw on the sound and lyrics instead of simply filming the rapper performing.

His route behind the camera began with less glamorous jobs. During a 2018 Red Bull Music Academy conversation, Williams recalled working around Video Music Box and doing errands on shoots for Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap and Public Enemy. He said he drove Chuck D and swept floors as he learned the business. He also sought out camera operators and crew members, asking questions to learn how their work was done.

At first, he wanted access to cameras and crews so he could learn to make films. He said the early videos he saw left him frustrated with how rap was being presented, and he wanted to bring more care to lighting and photography. “So I just said I’ll just do it myself.”

His more recent credits include “New York to the World,” a 2025 Kith campaign film featuring Fabolous, Lexa Gates and Jadakiss.
