Ice Cube laid out an informal approach for his “Listen & Laugh” podcast with Mike Epps in the official trailer: “We ain’t no pro podcasters, so we gonna do this shit our way.”
The three-minute official “Listen & Laugh” trailer previews a show that puts the two longtime friends in conversations about music, movies, comedy and sports.
The announced “Listen & Laugh” schedule called for new episodes on Fridays at 6 P.M. Eastern and 3 P.M. Pacific, with full conversations on YouTube and audio through podcast platforms. A full-episode premiere date had not been announced.
The teased guests included Dr. Dre, T.I., The Game, Regina King, Bill Burr, Stephen A. Smith and Lil Dicky, along with Cedric the Entertainer, Dana White, Michael Blackson, Funny Marco and O’Shea Jackson Jr.
During Dre’s appearance, Epps turned the producer’s work with Eminem into a joke. Guests also used Cube’s gangster-rap image as material, and Epps set up another exchange by identifying the set as the original “Friday” porch. Cube corrected him.
King played Cube’s sister, Dana, in the original “Friday.” Cube and Epps played Craig Jones and Day-Day in “Next Friday” in 2000, then reunited for “Friday After Next” in 2002.
The podcast gave the pair another chance to collaborate as “Last Friday” moved toward production.
They submitted the movie’s script in July, and Lawrence Lamont, who directed Keke Palmer and SZA in “One Of Them Days,” was named its director in October. California also selected the film for production tax credits on October 7, with Cube identified as its star, writer and producer.
“I’m thrilled to produce Last Friday right here in Southern California, where our cast and crew lives,” Cube said in the state announcement.
The production planned to employ more than 180 local cast and crew members.
The publisher’s description also put personal stories on the table, from first crushes and heartbreak to career breaks.
It described the hosts’ roles this way: “Cube’s gonna make you listen and Epps is gonna make you laugh. And sometimes, it will be the other way around.” The description named “Last Friday” among the subjects the hosts would discuss.
