Javits Frimpong’s Family Receives Nearly $900,000 As Parents Seek Justice

Javits Frimpong’s family received nearly $900,000 in donations after the Ghanaian teenager’s walk to school in the Bronx ended in a fatal shooting.

The 15-year-old’s death has brought financial support and public mourning as his parents seek answers about the Oct. 29 attack. A GoFundMe benefiting his father, Thomas Frimpong, showed $898,199 toward a $1.1 million goal Thursday, Nov. 5, with more than 27,000 donations. The campaign will help cover funeral costs, burial arrangements and unexpected expenses.

His mother, Doris Adu Gyamfi, traveled from Ghana toward New York on Wednesday after receiving a visa to attend her son’s funeral. Video released by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs showed relatives praying before boarding their flight, ABC7 reported.

Javits had moved to the United States to join his father just a year earlier. According to the family’s fundraiser, Oct. 28 marked the anniversary of his arrival. He was killed the following morning while heading to DreamYard Preparatory School.

Investigators said three people wearing hoods and surgical masks were in Crotona Park before approaching Javits. He ran and all three pursued him before he was shot in the back, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. Javits later died at the hospital.

Thomas believes the killing was connected to bullying. He said the school principal had informed him that two students were suspended following an incident involving his son.

“The principal told me Javits is innocent. Javits is innocent. He was defending himself,” Thomas said.

Police are examining bullying as a possible motive but have not established that connection. Kenny said investigators were also considering robbery and mistaken identity. He said detectives had found no indication that Javits was involved in gang activity.

Questions have also surrounded access to school records. Kenny said Monday that the Department of Education required a subpoena before releasing information about the alleged bullying. The department subsequently said it was cooperating and would provide records in accordance with applicable laws.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Oct. 31 that President Donald Trump had agreed to grant Javits’ mother a visa immediately following their telephone conversation. Her departure Wednesday brought the family closer to gathering for his funeral.

“I want justice for my son, that’s all. I wanted my son to become a doctor,” his mother said in a video.

The donations will help the family bury Javits. His mother’s words describe the future she had imagined for him: an education followed by a medical career. As supporters contribute toward his funeral, his parents are still seeking answers about the morning that ended those plans.
