Jay-Z reportedly chose himself to headline the 2027 Super Bowl halftime show. The move would put the Roc Nation founder on the stage he helped shape for other stars.
Puck’s Dave Brooks reported October 20 that several sources named Jay-Z as the pick for Super Bowl LXI. His report said Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber had also been in the running. The NFL and Roc Nation did not respond to Puck’s request for comment.
Neither the NFL nor Roc Nation had named a headliner on their current news pages. Puck said a formal reveal could come this weekend, when Jay-Z plays SoFi Stadium. Roc Nation listed his two shows for October 23 and 24.
Jay-Z’s name had been in the mix for more than a month. AllHipHop covered that prospect on September 18. At the time, a source said he might take the job if no other star was booked.
Jay-Z had not ruled it out. In a January 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, he spoke about why he had not picked himself.
“I thought it would be selfish to pick myself too early,” he said. “Maybe one year.”
He made those remarks at the premiere of “The Book of Clarence,” as Usher prepared for that year’s game. By then, Roc Nation had helped bring Rihanna and The Weeknd to halftime. It also worked on the 2022 show led by Dr. Dre. Jay-Z had stayed off the stage himself.
Roc Nation began working with the NFL in 2019 as its live music entertainment strategist. The company won Emmy Awards for its work, including for Bad Bunny’s halftime show this year.
Puck reported that the NFL renewed the deal in 2024 for five more years, at $5 million a year. That would keep Roc Nation tied to the show past next February.
The Los Angeles dates will close his “JAŸ-Z30” run. Those shows are set for the same venue as the Super Bowl, less than four months before the game. A pop-up for his anniversary shows is due to close on October 22.
Super Bowl LXI is set for February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
