JCA election set for Sabina Park Today
While Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) President Dr Donovan Bennett is set to return unopposed when the organisation holds its election on Thursday, keen interest surrounds other key executive positions. The election, to be held alongside the annual general meeting (AGM), is set for Kingston Cricket Club at Sabina Park, starting at 11:00 am. Former West Indies spinner Nehemiah Perry, who serves as president of Kingston Cricket Club, is set to contest the second vice-president role against St Ann Cricket Association boss Keith Walford. Perry had previously indicated interest in challenging first JCA Vice-President Fritz Harris before shifting his focus to the second vice-presidency. In another notable contest, the incumbent General Secretary Laurence Garriques faces a challenge from veteran sport administrator Anthony Davis. The Electoral Office of Jamaica is expected to supervise the voting process to ensure fairness and transparency. The association’s AGM and election were to have been held in May but were postponed pending the ratification of proposed constitutional and governance changes. Among those amendments was the extension of executive term limits from two years to four years, paving the way for the 79-year-old Bennett to remain in the post until 2030. The JCA president has expressed eagerness to receive a fresh mandate in his bid to revitalise local cricket and strengthen Jamaica’s contribution to the regional game. “I get the impression there are some positive movements in the game, so I’m just hoping we can accelerate that process because we really want to get back to the top as soon as possible,” Bennett told the Jamaica Observer in August. “It’s very important for West Indies cricket that Jamaica does well. Jamaica has the largest economy and the largest population so it stands to reason that if Jamaica does well then West indies cricket will do well,” he reasoned. — Sanjay Myers
