Jennifer Lopez Turns Empty Nest Heartache Into New Music

Jennifer Lopez returned to the studio after her twins left for college, turning their absence into new music.

Speaking with Variety, the singer said Max and Emme’s departure gave her room to write and record again. She described the change as frightening and sad, even as she praised the songs it helped produce.

Her new track, “Proof of Love,” deals with grief and absence over dance music, she said. The hurt can show how much a person matters.

“They take up such a big part of your brain for so long, and when they’re gone, which is devastating and sad and scary, you’re facing a life that’s totally different now, and you’re like, ‘What am I going to do with this space and this time?’ For me, I just went back in the studio. I’ve written some of the best songs that I’ve ever written, and I’m really excited,” Jennifer Lopez said.

She also described the broader music she has been making as joyful, with some sadness still inside it.

The move had been weighing on her well before the twins packed up.

During a May appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Lopez said she had cried for months while preparing for their high school graduation.

Writing their yearbook messages took two days. The twins planned to attend different colleges, and she supported each of their choices. She joked that small dorm rooms might make them miss home and come back to visit.

Her stage work also carried a hopeful tone earlier this year. AllHipHop covered her Las Vegas residency opening, where she told fans she was learning and growing.

That Caesars Palace production opened December 30, 2025. It mixed her own hits with Broadway songs and featured a 17-piece band. Ja Rule joined the opening performances for “I’m Real” and “Ain’t It Funny.”

The song will be a bonus on the first vinyl edition of her 2011 album Love?, arriving in November. Preorders began October 28, with three versions planned.

Fans will also get “The JLO Show: Live in Las Vegas,” a filmed version of the stage production. CBS announced that the March 28 closing performance will air November 26 from 8 to 10 P.M. ET/PT.

Paramount+ will carry an extended version.

The special will include hits, Broadway standards and songs that helped shape her own career. The Thanksgiving slot also ties into a family tradition: Lopez and her relatives gathered to watch movie musicals during the holiday.
