According to a release from JFJ, Corporal Trevoy Shaw of the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) Special Operations Branch was fatally shot during an armed confrontation in the Five Miles area.
Reports indicate that the confrontation began about 5:15 am as a special operations team searched for wanted men. Lawmen reportedly came under gunfire from two men who had barricaded themselves inside a house with other occupants, including the child.
Shaw was killed, while a second cop was shot and injured. A third policeman was also injured.
The 10-year-old girl reportedly fled the house and was found with gunshot injuries. She was taken to Spanish Town Hospital, where she was said to be in serious but stable condition.
The two men were also fatally shot during the incident.
JFJ extended condolences to Shaw’s family, colleagues and the wider JCF, while wishing the injured child and the wounded lawmen a full recovery.
Executive Director of JFJ Mickel Jackson said the organisation was awaiting the findings of an independent investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom), as well as further information from the JCF.
“We mourn with the JCF family during this difficult time. We are also deeply concerned by the shooting and injury of the 10-year-old girl. We await the findings from the independent investigation by Indecom and further information from the JCF, including the circumstances that resulted in the child being caught in the exchange of gunfire,” Jackson said.
