John Legend Earns Music Matters Lifetime Honor

John Legend will receive a lifetime achievement award at the 2027 Music Matters Awards Gala, with music education at the heart of the celebration.

The Guitar Center Music Foundation will hold the event May 21, 2027, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Beverly Hills, according to Billboard.

The award recognizes his music, education and philanthropy work. Funds will support instrument grants, and Legend will help a chosen school or nonprofit get instruments. The gala will include dinner, musical tributes and performances, with more honorees and participating artists to be announced.

The singer also made a business move earlier this year. As AllHipHop reported, he joined Roc Nation for management under Jay Brown after leaving Ty Stiklorius’ Friends at Work. Stiklorius continued working with him on other shared business ventures.

The foundation says demand for its help far exceeds what it can provide. It receives more than 150 grant requests each quarter and can meet only about 30 of them.

Founded in 2005, the independent nonprofit says its instrument grants have reached more than 300,000 people through schools and music therapy programs.

Its work reaches beyond schoolchildren. Veterans, hospital patients, unhoused people and people affected by natural disasters are also among those it serves.

One 2024 project shows what that support can look like.

The foundation supplied 16 six-string guitars and two acoustic electric bass guitars for Calle a Calle’s program at A Place Called Home, which serves South Central youth and their families. USC’s Arts in Action initiative funded the program, which taught guitar alongside the social and political context of Corridos Tumbados.

Under the foundation’s grant rules, aid comes as instruments and equipment, with grants valued from $1,000 to $5,000 based on need.

The program serves public schools and U.S. nonprofits that teach people to make music. That includes community classes, after-school instruction and music therapy, with participants of any age eligible.

Programs must have operated for at least a year and offer weekly instruction for at least eight months each year. For now, the foundation says it has paused application reviews while it updates the program and its processes.
