John Legend Explains How Pharrell Ended Up Producing Cinematic Album “Muse”

John Legend just dropped one of the most unexpected moves of his career, teaming up with Pharrell to create an entire album that sounds nothing like what you’d expect from either of them.

The project, called Muse, hits October 23, and it’s the first time the two have made a full record together, despite knowing each other for over two decades.

Legend performed the lead single “Daylight” on CBS’s America’s Tailgate during the NFL season opener, and the track immediately showed that something different was happening here.

The whole thing came together in Paris in January 2025, with Pharrell producing and co-writing every track at his Louis Vuitton studio, where he works as the brand’s menswear creative director.

Legend explained that he wanted to completely shake up his formula because his ballads had dominated his career for so long, and he felt like it was time to prove himself all over again.

“I think my repertoire has always been very diverse, but the piano-driven ballads have gotten the most traction throughout my career,” he said. “I wanted to shake up the formula and do something fresh and new.”

The inspiration actually came from Legend appearing on Clipse’s comeback album Let God Sort ‘Em Out, which Pharrell produced.

That collaboration sparked something, and Pharrell called Legend with the idea to build an entire project around his voice.

The new album draws from gospel, standards, Doo-Wop, classic soul, Afrobeat, and Hip-Hop, creating what Legend describes as a “Black James Bond aesthetic” with a modern backbeat underneath everything.

“Pray For Ya” already soundtracked Louis Vuitton’s Fall-Winter 2026 Men’s show and appeared in Pharrell’s Moet Ice Impérial campaign, giving fans a preview of the cinematic, lush sound they’d get on the full project.

The album features Pharrell on multiple tracks and brings Clipse back for “Bodies On The Floor,” which uses gang warfare language to describe a toxic relationship.

Legend recorded some songs Pharrell fully wrote, which he almost never does, showing the trust between them.

The album’s title references both the Greek mythology concept of muses and the idea that ancestors serve as creative inspiration.

Legend’s commitment to staying hungry and proving himself continues beyond music.

He’s also working on a new musical called “Imitation of Life” at The Shed in November, marking his first original theatrical score.
