Judge Rules Against Drakeo The Ruler’s Estate In Live Nation Lawsuit As Trial Looms

Drakeo the Ruler family’s relentless pursuit of justice suffered a minor setback as his mother Darrylene Corniel fights through the courts.

Corniel is suing Live Nation and multiple defendants tied to the 2021 backstage stabbing that claimed her son’s life.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge recently ruled that Live Nation Worldwide Inc. and C3 Presents LLC don’t have to hand over financial records to the estate at this stage of the lawsuit, but the family isn’t backing down from their mission to hold the festival organizers accountable for what happened that night.

According to reporting on the case, Judge James I. Montgomery stated he wasn’t convinced by arguments that the estate deserved access to the companies’ financial information to prove punitive damages at this point in the proceedings.

The deadly incident that sparked the lawsuits went down on December 18, 2021, at the Once Upon a Time in LA festival held at Exposition Park.

Drakeo was attacked during a backstage altercation and suffered a fatal stab wound to the neck, dying the next day at the hospital.

He was only 28, a rising West Coast talent who’d built a reputation for his distinctive flow and poetic lyricism since dropping his first mixtape in 2015. His debut studio album I Am Mr. Mosely came out in April 2017, and critics consistently praised his oddly expressive word choices and unique approach to rap.

The family’s legal battle extends far beyond just Live Nation.

They’ve also named C3 Presents, Bobby Dee Presents Inc., Jeff Shuman, and USC as defendants in the wrongful death lawsuit, seeking accountability from everyone involved in the event’s security and operations.

The investigation into his untimely death is ongoing.

Drakeo’s former security guard claimed under oath that he witnessed rapper YG brandish a knife during the brawl.

The security guard said he was fighting YG and another man when Drakeo got pulled into the chaos, and he saw YG produce a blade and slash it in his direction.

YG has consistently denied any involvement in Drakeo’s death, but the allegations have kept him in the spotlight as authorities continue their investigation.

In July 2026, police executed a search warrant at a Burbank property connected to YG and briefly detained him for questioning as part of the ongoing murder investigation.

The case has remained largely unsolved despite dozens of witnesses being present at the festival that night.

The civil Trial against the promoters is currently scheduled for November 30, 2026.
