Gospel singer-songwriter Kevin Downswell is describing his fifth studio album, Joy Is Here, as his most vulnerable and personal project to date, reflecting the experiences, spiritual growth, and renewed convictions that have shaped his life.
The 10-track album was previewed during an intimate listening session at Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston on Thursday, October 22, where members of the music industry and media were given insight into the inspiration behind the music.
“If I never dropped the album this year I would have missed something. I don’t know if it was somebody who needed these kinds of songs — maybe it’s one; maybe it’s a thousand, or a million. You know when you just have that urgency? It feels like the most perfect thing I’ve ever done,” Downswell told the Jamaica Observer following the private listening.
The evening unfolded as a mixture of celebration, reflection, and worship, with several selections keeping guests rocking and dancing, while others moved some attendees to tears through their relatable and spiritually uplifting messages.
In an unconventional approach, guests were divided into groups to listen to selected tracks and share their interpretations before Downswell offered further insight into the inspiration behind each song. He also explored the recurring theme of rising higher despite life’s challenges.

The interactive concept was developed by music industry strategist and media communications executive Judith Bodley, who sought to encourage meaningful engagement between the artiste and his audience. The album features collaborations with Papa San on Who Could It Be But God, Minister Marion Hall on You Remembered Me, Gramps Morgan on The Reason, and PantaSon on Bless Me. For Downswell, working with entertainers from different musical backgrounds provides an opportunity to share his Christian faith with wider audiences. “The kind of love and respect that I get from these artistes, I can’t find words. Gramps Morgan being on this album is one of the humblest things ever. Plus, Gramps is on the album talking about Jesus Christ; it’s the most amazing thing you could ever see,” he shared. “It’s humbling to be able to pull men who are used to a particular genre and have them declare Jesus Christ on your platform.” The singer previously collaborated with dancehall veteran Bounty Killer on Call Him, a partnership that initially attracted criticism from some quarters. “I got some lashing for it, and then a few months later the same people came back and said, ‘Now I see what you were doing.’ They recognised that Bounty didn’t pull me over, I was the one who pulled him over, because they saw changes,” Downswell recalled. He maintained that, while artistes retain their individual musical identities, his Christian convictions remain non-negotiable. “Anytime I am with an artiste, no matter where they are, it’s no compromise. It’s Jesus Christ every time,” he added.Kevin Downwell (Photo: Cavaughn Edwards)
Beyond the collaborations, Joy Is Here explores themes of gratitude, perseverance, divine reassurance, and spiritual growth through songs such as Higher (From the Fire), He’s Not Done With You Yet, and It’s Okay, I Got You. Downswell also acknowledged the musicians who contributed to the production, including musical director and bassist Rhon Matthison, drummer Wendell Lawrence, keyboardists Chris Wright and Wade Johnson, and lead guitarist Brandon Benjamin. The event was hosted by Love 101’s Sara-Ann Miller, with DJ Rebirth providing musical entertainment. Among those in attendance was Downswell’s mentor, Dr Henley Morgan, who expressed pride in the singer’s artistic development. Guests from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and other Caribbean territories were also present. Downswell said his greatest desire is for the songs to resonate with people navigating everyday challenges and encourage them to find strength in their faith. “My greatest desire is to see a girl with her earphones in heading to school singing, It’s Okay, I Got You; or a man driving and singing, ‘Your love lifts me higher’ — that is my greatest desire. Let everything else come after,” he said. “Let these songs get our eyes off ourselves and our battles and put them on the one who matters most.” Joy Is Here has been available for pre-order before its October 30 release.
