Killer Mike Joins High Museum’s 100th Birthday In Atlanta

Killer Mike joined the High Museum of Art’s 100th birthday party in Atlanta on Sunday. The milestone comes with a plan for free museum entry on school trips, a cause that runs through his own ties to art.

FOX 5 Atlanta reported Monday that the rapper, Mayor Andre Dickens and the Atlanta Hawks took part in the Centennial Block Party.

The High’s birthday plans include free entry for Atlanta Public Schools’ K-12 field trips throughout the 2026-27 school year. It says about 4,000 students from the district visit in an average year.

Killer Mike grew up taking such trips. When he joined the High’s board in 2018, he told Artnet News that his public school had brought him there. His school also took students to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Center for Puppetry Arts.

“I’m a product of the High Museum. I’m a product of Atlanta. I’m a product of the Atlanta public school system,” he said in that interview.

Killer Mike wanted kids from working-class and middle-class homes to have those same ties to art. He also wanted people in music and fine art to spend more time in the same rooms. He hoped more money from the music business would then reach the arts.

He traced that wish to school art classes, where teachers helped him learn to love visual art after he left a music program. He took two art courses a day and later began buying art when he earned enough from music.

He also urged parents with tight budgets to take their kids to museums. He said those trips could be a cheap day out and let them share what they saw.

The High’s centennial plans also describe a shift in who visits. It says visitors of color rose from 15 percent of its crowd to 55 percent since 2015. Its outreach includes free entry and after-hours events.

The plans also include public art partnerships with MARTA and the Atlanta Beltline. Guests can keep taking part in birthday tours and other events on the High’s monthly free days. Its plans list UPS Second Sundays and Access for All days.
