Learjet Crash Killed Nine As Jet Nosedives Into Florida Neighborhood

A Learjet traveling to the Bahamas ended in tragedy Sunday when the jet carrying nine people crashed near Florida homes and killed everyone aboard.

The Learjet 60 went down in a residential area near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County at approximately 12:50 p.m. Nov. 1, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine occupants died.

The aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was traveling to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. Its flight ended near Military Trail, where emergency crews responded to flames and wreckage beside a residential community.

Video showed the jet descending steeply before exploding near a roadway. The impact left a burning crater and sent thick black smoke above the surrounding neighborhood. Homes and passing vehicles were close to where the aircraft struck, according to reporting by The Associated Press.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said there were no immediate reports of people on the ground being injured or killed. Officials had not identified the nine occupants or released a breakdown of passengers and crew in the reporting reviewed for this story.

The emergency response disrupted traffic along Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputies closed the roadway in both directions and asked motorists to avoid the area as authorities worked at the scene. Florida Power & Light crews also responded.

Federal investigators will now determine what caused the fatal descent. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, with the NTSB directing the inquiry and providing subsequent updates. The FAA cautioned that its initial information was preliminary and subject to change.

The NTSB said investigators would arrive Sunday and Monday, according to CNN. A Monday news conference was also planned. No cause had been established in the reports reviewed.

A flight intended to connect Texas with the Bahamas instead ended beside Florida homes. Nine people were killed, a neighborhood became an emergency scene and the explanation for the aircraft’s final descent remained unresolved.
