Lefty Gunplay Recalls Corvette Crash That Pushed Him Toward Sobriety

Lefty Gunplay said a Corvette wreck nearly cost him his life and made him realize he needed to get sober.

In an interview on “The Real Report,” the rapper reflected on the crash as he discussed sobriety and the work still ahead of him.

“It was Fourth of July weekend, and I had a show. I was arguing with my girl at the time, and um I went to go get me a Corvette when they just came out the Stingrays. We were arguing when we crashed, and I’m not gonna throw her under the bus. It might have been me. It might have been her,” Lefty Gunplay revealed.

He said his car struck a wall and caught fire, leaving him and a passenger injured.

“I broke my wrist. I broke three ribs. I broke my knee. You know what I’m saying? Um I fractured my jaw. I was messed up, and the car went in flames,” he revealed.

The rapper said he regretted some of his past interviews that went viral. He also recalled turning to Top Dawg and Steve Lobel for help.

“I had to find myself again, you know, finding myself again and, you know, asking myself what I want. Learning how to breathe again and just be sober and just be normal and reinventing myself again. I’m still struggling with that,” Lefty Gunplay said.

He had also discussed his rehab stay in an August 31 episode of “Dog In The Yard,” where he said he was nearing 10 months sober. He still struggled each day, sometimes hour by hour.

In that earlier conversation, he said he told Lobel, his label and Kendrick Lamar that he wanted treatment. What he expected to be a month in a Florida rehab facility became a nine-month stay.

On “Dog In The Yard,” he said treatment meant putting his music career on hold. He described going without a phone and being away from family. Lobel helped him enter the facility, he said.

He also described feeling happier and more aware, even as he adjusted to life without drugs. Staying busy was part of that effort. He said he had used drugs since he was 13, making sobriety unfamiliar territory.

Making music brought its own demands. He told host Pistol Pete he felt pressure to stay relevant. Each new song had to be better than the last.

His music reached a much bigger audience with “TV Off,” his collaboration with Kendrick Lamar on GNX.

The track won Best Rap Song at the 2026 Grammys, which recognizes songwriting. Lefty and Lamar also shared a Best Rap Performance nomination for the song.

Back on “The Real Report,” Lefty said he liked himself better sober. He described rebuilding his life as an ongoing struggle and said he still had a long way to go.
