Leon Bridges Admits His New Sound May Have Driven Fans Away

Leon Bridges said his changing music may have pushed some fans away. He was grateful that fans could grow with him.

“I feel like some of my fans are married to my first album,” he told Esquire. The singer discussed that pull between old expectations and new work in a new interview. He said he still loved “River,” a track from that first album.

His debut, “Coming Home,” arrived in 2015. More than a decade later, his fifth album, “Happiness Anytime,” put dance music at the center.

Bridges told Apple Music that his last album, “Leon,” had been a slower, personal record. For this follow-up, he wanted songs that would get people moving. He said writing upbeat tracks on guitar could be hard for him. Working with Jungle gave him a way into that sound.

The 12-song Columbia Records release came out on September 25. Lydia Kitto, one of its two producers from Jungle, also sang on “All Day, All Night.”

The songs still dealt with his life, not just dancing. Apple Music’s notes linked “Talk It Over” to tough times in a relationship. He said the title track urged him, and his fans, to choose joy in good times and bad.

The shift reached beyond the beats. In Sony Music’s account of the sessions, Bridges focused on his singing, how the songs felt and what stories he told. Kitto shaped the tunes and how the notes fit together. Josh Lloyd-Watson shaped the tracks and arrangements. Bassist Pino Palladino also joined them in the studio.

The group made six songs in four days during an early Los Angeles session. They began work together in April 2025 after meeting at festivals. One early spark came from a few chords on keys and a drum beat. Bridges began singing what became “Your Love Is Electric.”

Their rule was to finish a full song each day, rather than leave it for the next session. Later sessions drew on Afrobeat, Brazilian music, soul and disco.

The goal also shaped the stage show. As AllHipHop previously reported, the live setup paired a vinyl DJ with horns and three backing singers. Kitto said Bridges wanted room to put down his guitar and dance out front again.
