Lil Real One died at 41 after a reported stabbing at Angola prison, leaving his family seeking answers about how he was attacked while restrained.
His relatives told The Lens that another prisoner stabbed the New Orleans rapper, born Brandon Guidry, in the neck on October 20. They said he was wearing handcuffs and shackles.
Family members learned of the attack from other prisoners on October 21. His sister, Turiya Om Guidry, said she was told he was pronounced dead October 23 at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge.
The Lens could not get prison officials to confirm the circumstances. Relatives said the prison had given them no information about the attack.
At the time, he was reportedly on extended lockdown in Angola’s Camp C.
He had been serving a life sentence for the killing of Bruce Tims and a concurrent 50-year term for shooting Anthony Joseph, who survived. The convictions were for second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
A 2018 appeal ruling described the March 21, 2015 shooting near Bourbon and Conti streets in the French Quarter. The court said a fight at the Last Call bar preceded the gunfire by about half an hour.
Joseph identified Lil Real One as both the man he fought and the shooter. Lil Real One pleaded not guilty before a jury convicted him on both counts. His appeal challenged the photo lineup, limits on defense photographs and his ability to see surveillance videos shown at trial.
The Louisiana Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal upheld the convictions and sentences May 23, 2018. It found the identification reliable and rejected his claims that the other trial issues had harmed his defense.
Before prison, Lil Real One had been mentored by Soulja Slim, who gave him his rap name, his family said.
His recordings linked him with Slim and another New Orleans rap mainstay, B.G. Apple Music credits Lil Real One as the featured guest on their track “Heata On Me,” from Thug Brothers.
Slim released the gold-certified Give It 2 ‘Em Raw through No Limit Records in 1998. He was killed in New Orleans on November 26, 2003.
“He could make beats, mix and master. He was a natural,” his sister told The Lens.
