Lil Wayne opened up about his son’s remarkable journey from soccer player to Division I kicker prospect, revealing how Dwayne Carter III earned his Colorado scholarship through pure dedication and hard work.
Speaking on “The Joint Venture Show” podcast, the Young Money founder beamed with pride as he discussed his son’s athletic trajectory, emphasizing that the opportunity came entirely from his own merit, not Wayne’s connections or celebrity status.
“It’s of course every amazing emotion that you can name, but given his situation, he’s a soccer player by nature,” Lil Wayne said.
Dwayne Carter III made his high school football debut for Gainesville High School in Georgia during the 2026 season, going 2-for-2 on field goals in his first game against defending national champion Buford on ESPN2.
The high school senior’s path to football was unconventional. He’s primarily a soccer player who only picked up kicking about two years ago as a way to stay in shape during his soccer off-season.
What started as a conditioning tool quickly transformed into something much bigger.
“So taking up kicking was just something he started doing about two years ago, two summers ago. So not that long ago. Just to better prepare for soccer and on his off season,” Lil Wayne revealed.
The transition from soccer to football kicking showcases how athletic versatility can open unexpected doors.
Dwayne trained with the son of Hall of Famer Morten Andersen, who spent 13 seasons with the New Orleans Saints and holds the NFL record for games played by a kicker, giving him elite-level coaching from day one.
His high school coaches recognized his potential and encouraged him to compete at a higher level.
“Once he made that team he did really well. He was recommended to go to the school he’s at now, which is much better for kickers and athletics, period,” Wayne explained.
In June 2026, Dwayne received his first Division I scholarship offer from Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, one of the most legendary athletes in sports history.
