Lionel Richie Reveals The Cause Of Emergency Hospital Visit

Lionel Richie openly addressed dehydration at The Muny in St. Louis hours before entering a hospital for precautionary testing.

The 77-year old singer turned his recent health problems into part of Saturday night’s performance while repeatedly drinking electrolytes and explaining why his summer tour had become physically demanding.

By the end of the concert, Richie was seated for “All Night Long” and another hospital visit was ahead.

“Some things have been happening on this tour that kind of shook me up a little bit, because I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on,” Richie told the audience. “I went back to the doctor, and he said, ‘You are suffering from dehydration.’” The documented remarks were published before reports of his hospitalization emerged.

The firsthand account provides a new window into a night initially presented as an unexpected medical emergency.

Richie was already aware that dehydration had affected him during the tour and made several electrolyte breaks part of his act.

He delivered a nearly complete performance and remained standing for most of the show.

The singer moved through solo favorites and Commodores material before taking a seat for the finale. The concert closed The Muny’s 2026 season and was described by the local publication as essentially sold out.

However, everything took a twist when the iconic singer checked himself into a St. Louis hospital after leaving the venue. Sources with direct knowledge told TMZ that Richie was admitted to the intensive care unit while doctors conducted tests.

He hopes to be discharged Tuesday.

ABC News later reported through a separate source close to Richie’s tour that the singer sought hospital care out of caution. Neither report identified the hospital or disclosed test results.

The episode followed Richie’s June 24 medical emergency during a concert in St. Paul, Minnesota. He told that audience he felt “dizzy” and “strange” before ending the show early.

Paramedics met him backstage and transported him to a hospital by ambulance.

Richie subsequently postponed two performances on medical advice but returned to the stage June 30 in Pittsburgh. During later tour stops, he openly discussed dehydration and regularly paused for electrolyte drinks.

No representative for Richie had publicly confirmed his ICU status, diagnosis or discharge plans as of Monday.
