Malcolm Spellman wants record-label power to drive the next chapter of “The Drop: A Snowfall Saga”, with the show’s family caught in the squeeze.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he described plans for seasons two and three. FX has not renewed the series, and Spellman said he had heard nothing from the network about another season.
He saw season one as an introduction to the family, with its final episodes leaning into the music business.
“The music business destroys families, and this family will spend its entire existence in this show trying to survive,” he said.
The drama takes place in 1990s Los Angeles, after “Snowfall” followed the city’s crack epidemic. Gail Bean returned as Wanda Bell, while Isaiah John reprised Leon Simmons. Wanda’s pursuit of a place in rap runs alongside Leon’s work serving the community through a legal clinic.
That shift gave Wanda a different kind of power. In the original series, she struggled with addiction, entered recovery and left for Ghana with Leon. In the spinoff, she builds a team around her own ambition rather than living at the mercy of Franklin Saint’s operation.
Music also runs through the family itself. Asante Blackk plays Wanda’s younger cousin Lamar Kinsey, whose gift she has encouraged for years. Peyton Alex Smith plays Lamar’s older brother James, who faces pressure from Big Daddy to take over the family business.
Artillery, played by Compton rapper Buddy, brings another set of problems. FX describes the character as a gifted writer facing both street recognition and hostility from the LAPD’s CRASH unit. His songs put him in conflict with forces beyond the recording booth.
Buddy had already connected the role to his own experience during an NABJ conversation covered by AllHipHop. He described signing away intellectual property and seeing label-approved budgets turn into costs he would owe later. That was the business experience he brought to a fictional rapper trying to find his way.
At the NABJ preview, Bean pointed to Wanda’s family and her relationship with Leon as parts of the new story. John described returning to Leon as a chance to keep building the character’s arc.
Spellman’s next chapter would examine label manipulation alongside the pressure that money and gangs put on the family.
