Man arrested in sexual assault case of 10-y-o girl

CLARENDON, Jamaica— Detectives in Clarendon are set to question a man identified as a person of interest amid an investigation into the abduction and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in May Pen, Clarendon earlier this month. The man was detained on Thursday by the police as part of the ongoing probe. “He is a person of interest. A man was picked up and we are doing some investigations. He is not a suspect at this stage pending further investigations,” said a police source. Police said on September 8, the schoolgirl exited a taxi at the entrance to the Mineral Heights Housing Scheme while on her way to school when a man approached her and persuaded her to get into his vehicle. Police said the child was abducted and taken to a neighbouring community where she was sexually assaulted in a heavily vegetated area before being released in the vicinity of her school by the abductor. A report was made to primary school staff and the child was taken to hospital. The police were subsequently alerted about the incident. — Kasey Williams
