Manning cup continues with wins for Camperdown, Greater Portmore

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Camperdown High joins Norman Manley High as the early qualifiers to the second round of the ISSA Manning Cup with a 2-1 win over Holy Trinity High on Wednesday. Camperdown surged to 12 points atop Zone A from four games and cannot be passed by three other teams with two sets of games remaining. Greater Portmore are second on 10 points following their 2-0 win over Jonathan Grant High and moved a step closer to qualification. Holy Trinity remained in third spot on seven points, just one ahead of Bridgeport High, which defeated Ascot High 2-0. Despite slipping a spot to fifth on four points, Ascot High are still in contention for one of the three top spots, and the same can be said of sixth-placed Waterford High on three points. Zone B continues to be tightly knit as four points separate the top six teams. Jose Marti surged to the top with 10 points after thrashing Clan Carthy 6-1. Hillel Academy moved into second spot on eight points with a 3-0 mauling of St Mary’s College, who slipped to fourth with six points. The surprise result of the round came courtesy of lowly placed Papine High, which edged previous leader Innswood High 1-0. While Papine moved to six points but still in sixth spot, Innswood slipped two places to be third on seven points with several teams breathing down their neck. In Zone C, Norman Manley, already through to the second round, trounced Pembroke Hall High 3-0 for their fifth straight win to be on 15 points. Edith Dalton James moved into second spot on nine points after whipping Kingston Technical High 3-0, who are in fourth on four points and only have a slim chance of making the top three. The inactive Denham Town are third on nine points, with Pembroke Hall sitting in fifth spot on three points. Ardenne High picked up their first point of the season, drawing 1-1 with Donald Quarrie High. —   Howard Walker
