Mathematics Recalls Contract Pushback & Questions Streaming Pay

Mathematics recalled pushing back when a lawyer called contract terms standard, then questioned streaming compensation in a new interview about the business behind his music.
Speaking with The Hip Hop Museum, the Wu-Tang producer described a willingness to ask for more. “But I don’t want standard.” His reasoning: “The worst they can say is no.” He credited RZA, Divine and Power with teaching him about ownership.
That interview also addressed his dislike of streaming and desire for fair pay. He questioned who had set streaming’s pay guidelines.
He said physical purchases showed fans making an effort to support artists.
“But I’m in the record business, so you have to deal with streaming.” He advised artists to weigh their value realistically and know which terms they could accept or choose to walk away from.
Wu-Tang’s business history gives that conversation a longer frame. The group’s structure allowed members to make solo deals with different labels while staying in the collective, an arrangement described in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s official profile.
He also described how he makes records. In a 2025 AllHipHop interview with AllHipHop, Mathematics explained that his process for Black Samson: The Bastard Swordsman went beyond handing rappers a beat. He built out songs before bringing them to the artists.
He also said he appreciated when a rapper passed on a track that did not feel right. Getting a yes was not the only sign of respect in that process.
Mathematics wanted listeners to have time with a complete album, too. “I still believe in vision, in art you can hold,” he told AllHipHop.
His next project puts him back in that producer’s role. Black Samson: The Saga Continues is coming through DNA Music, with Mathematics producing the entire album. It follows the separate Black Samson: The Bastard Swordsman, released in April 2025.
“God Body,” the first single, paired Method Man and AZ. The forthcoming album’s guest list also includes Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa and U-God, bringing several Wu-Tang voices into a record built around Mathematics’ production. DNA Music has set November 6 for the release.
