Megan Thee Stallion Explains How Silence Over Her Contract Led To Regret & Legal War

Megan Thee Stallion said she once feared questioning her record deal. She spoke at Overcoming Impossible Live at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge in New York City.

Entrepreneur and Robert Irvine organized the event for business owners. The program paired small-group work with afternoon talks from Megan, Gary Vaynerchuk and Irvine.

“I was a little bit nervous about asking questions,” she told Entrepreneur.

What followed were years of fights over her music.

As AllHipHop previously reported, Megan signed with Carl Crawford’s 1501 Certified Entertainment in 2018 and sued the label in 2020. In October 2023, the two sides settled and parted ways. They kept the terms private.

During that dispute, Megan accused 1501 of blocking releases and keeping her under contract after she had fulfilled its terms. She also sought outside oversight of the label’s finances to ensure it could pay a potential judgment. Crawford disputed that request and accused her of using it to harass the label.

“I started realizing I’m not making as much money as I should be making because I kind of just gave my life away to somebody else,” Megan Thee Stallion said. “I had to take a step back and think, Okay, let me see what’s going on with my contracts. Let me figure out how I can be my own boss.”

Her next deals put ownership at the center. In February 2024, Warner Music Group announced an agreement that left Megan with her masters and publishing.

Releases would come through her own Hot Girl Productions, with Warner providing distribution and help with radio and marketing. She also kept creative control. She could bring artists signed to her imprint into Warner’s network if she chose.

She had already started releasing music through her own company before the Warner deal.

“Cobra” arrived in November 2023. In its announcement, Warner counted “HISS” as the second solo song she released through her company.

A more recent deal continued that approach.

On August 14, 2026, Megan announced a distribution partnership with Interscope Records. The announcement said Hot Girl Productions would remain home for her releases, and she would keep her masters and publishing while receiving global distribution and strategic support.

“I’ve always wanted to create music on my terms while building a legacy that extends beyond the industry,” Megan said in that announcement.
