Mona Love Apologizes To Cardi B And Admits She Failed To Research Clip

Mona Love apologized to Cardi B after admitting she built a public colorism argument around an edited clip from an old video without doing enough research.

Love addressed the mess during Episode 978 of “The Joe Budden Podcast,” released Wednesday (November 4). She joined by phone after Joe Budden said the cast didn’t want to discuss her while she was absent.

The comedian said she reached out to Cardi after the rapper responded and never meant to hurt her. What hit Love hardest was Cardi’s claim that the discussion had brought another wave of attacks her way.

“Like that shit makes me feel horrible,” Love said.

Love said she had been dragged online herself and would not wish that experience on anyone. She added that hearing Cardi connect the backlash to her comments made her feel bad, especially because Cardi had been kind to her during years of private contact.

Budden told Love that the broader discussion about colorism did not need Cardi as its central example. He also reminded her that a platform as large as theirs carries real weight, even when a speaker’s intent is different from the result.

Love accepted that point. She said her reaction would have been completely different if she had known the clip was edited or understood how old it was.

She also admitted this was not the first time she had spoken on the podcast without researching enough. Her lesson was simple: “This was avoidable.”

The apology followed a sharp public response from Cardi on November 2. AllHipHop previously reported that the Bronx rapper said a 13-second section of a 15-minute Instagram Live from 2024 had been stripped of context.

Cardi said she had never denied that colorism was real or that lighter-skinned women could gain access to some opportunities.

Her objection was the idea that complexion explained her career. Cardi pointed to the work, talent and strategy behind her success.

She also questioned why Love had not contacted her privately about the clip after seeking her advice over the years on personal matters, surgery, career moves and brand deals.

Love had argued that Cardi’s lighter skin and Dominican heritage could affect how brands and the entertainment business viewed her.

She said her point was about unequal access, not a lack of talent. The problem, she now acknowledged, was focusing on Cardi without checking the full source.

Love said she and Cardi had already exchanged messages privately. She would not reveal what was said, but she promised to repeat her apology on a large platform instead of keeping it inside a direct message.

She said the episode forced her to tighten up her research before weighing in on another public dispute.
