ST MARY, Jamaica — What should have been a week of birthday celebrations ended in tragedy on Monday after a St Mary woman and her teenage son were killed in a motor vehicle crash along the Wilderness main road in Galina.
The deceased have been identified as 38-year-old Abigayle Whitehorn of Hamilton Mountain, St Mary, and her 18-year-old son, Tyreke Cameron. Whitehorn was reportedly celebrating her birthday on the day of the fatal collision, having enjoyed an early celebration with friends at the Port Maria Bus Park on Sunday night. According to police reports, the crash occurred about 2:00 pm when a white Toyota Hiace bus travelling towards Port Maria reportedly went out of control, veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a grey Toyota Fielder motor car. Whitehorn, her son and another passenger were travelling in the Fielder towards Oracabessa when the collision occurred. Several occupants of both vehicles sustained injuries and were rushed to the Port Maria Hospital, where Whitehorn and Cameron were pronounced dead. The other injured individuals remain under medical care for serious injuries. In the wake of the fatal crash, the St Mary police are appealing to motorists to exercise extreme caution while travelling on the nation’s roadways. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
