Nas Hosts 29 Hour Workshop To Make Sure “Beat Street” On Broadway Is Perfect

Nas is bringing the 1984 hip-hop classic “Beat Street” to Broadway, and he’s already put in serious work to make it happen.

The Grammy-winning rapper orchestrated a 29-hour intensive workshop that brought together the creative team to develop the stage adaptation, and the results are already shaping up to be something special.

According to Deadline, the workshop brought together director Schele Williams from “The Wiz,” book writer Kristoffer Diaz from “Hell’s Kitchen,” and music supervisor Jason Michael Webb, who’s worked on Broadway hits like “MJ: The Musical” and the upcoming “Purple Rain.”

What makes this project so significant is that it’s not just another nostalgia play.

Nas is creating new material specifically for the stage while expanding the original film’s soundtrack, which means he’s actively shaping how this story gets told to a new generation.

The original 1984 film introduced the world to breakdancing, graffiti, DJing, and the culture that defined Hip-Hop’s early years.

The production team includes producers Richard Fearn, Arthur Baker, Michael Holman, and Peter Bittenbender, with Baker and Holman returning from the original 1984 film. ShowTown Theatricals is handling general management duties.

The film’s influence on Hip-Hop culture can’t be overstated. Artists like Ice-T, Ice Cube, LL Cool J, and Lin-Manuel Miranda have all cited “Beat Street” as a major influence on their careers and artistic development.

Robert Taylor, who played Lee in the original film, recently reflected on what that role meant.

“I gave up my childhood to be Lee,” Taylor explained in an interview with AllHipHop. “I didn’t ask for that. All I wanted to do was dance in a movie, get an audition real quick, be in a part, and that’s it. I didn’t know what came with it, right?” He continued, “I became a movie star because I became a movie star. I didn’t want to become a movie star.”
