Nas & Slick Rick Become Marvel Superheroes As Hip-Hop Hits New York Comic Con

Legendary MCs Nas and Slick Rick joined comic book artist Sanford Greene to discuss their superhero transformations, Hip-Hop’s influence and the importance of protecting the next generation.

Hip-Hop has always had its superheroes – Run DMC, LL Cool J and even Wu Tang Clan. Now, some of its greatest legends are stepping into a world traditionally occupied by Marvel’s mightiest mutants. The X-Men.

At New York Comic Con, rap icons Nas and Slick Rick joined acclaimed comic book artist Sanford Greene for a conversation that brought together two influential worlds: Hip-Hop and comic book culture.

Greene, celebrated for his work on Bitter Root and Power Man and Iron Fist, found himself in the unusual, awkward position of being both creator and fan.

For Nas, co-founder of the modern Mass Appeal, the collaboration represented something deeper than another creative venture. It was yet another opportunity to share space with Slick Rick, a pioneering storyteller.

The discussion touched on the forthcoming comic book collaboration involving the X-Men, Greene’s artistic interpretations the belief that Hip-Hop must continue to grow despite forces threatening its progress.

Sanford Greene: This is a dream come true for me, to be able to conversate with two of the GOATs. Give it up for the GOATs, guys! (Crowd roars)

I met these brothers last year for the first time. Look, I ain’t going to lie to you. I turned into a fan. I couldn’t even get my words together. Even right now, I’m like, I can’t believe I’m on stage with the GOATs.

And to be able to create this incredible world, how does it feel to see this now come to fruition?

Nas: What’s up, y’all?

This right here, I got to thank you because you are just an incredible, incredible man with your skills. And to be sitting here with one of my heroes, Slick Rick, is everything to me.

Coming here and being with you guys is beautiful. And also seeing us guys with the X-Men is this different level of creative collaborations, man. So I just appreciate all of those.

Sanford Greene: No doubt, no doubt, man. I guess he’s already brought up the X-Men.

Nas: Oh, my bad.

Sanford Greene: It’s all good, bro. We’ve already talked about it. The fans have been waiting for this. They’re still waiting. Hopefully, the book will be ready sooner than you think.

Slick, with you being what I consider one of the foundations of what is built today, I think about pretty much all the legends that’s on this label. I think about Ghost, and Ghost literally quotes lyrics from your catalog.

What is it like being with all of your influences, all your influencers, the folks that look up to you? What’s that like?

Slick Rick: I see it like a melting pot, you know? It’s the future of civilization.

To me, the youth, if you ask the youth of any color what’s the music they listen to, it’s going to come back to me and the clique over here, type of a thing.

So it’s the future. We just got to nurture it, make it well, feed the public, you know, fight these demons that’s trying to stop it from flourishing, growing like a seed.

So we feed people. You study things like that.

Sanford Greene: That really encourages me because when I was designing your character, Slick, the first thing I thought about was obviously the jewelry.

I feel like the jewelry has some fantastical mysticism to it. And I started thinking about your persona and how you move and how you go about even your space, your spatial awareness. Everything is very [unclear] and very calm.

But Nas is like that too, right?

And I started thinking about when I was designing both of your characters, I wanted to personify mysticism, carrying that regal type of character.

So again, trust me, I was sweating bullets. I was hoping that you guys would like what you saw.

And I guess you like what you saw when you saw your characters coming to life on the page.

Nas: We love you.

Slick Rick: I love you. Thank you. You held us down.

Nas: No doubt. For sure.

For decades, rappers have borrowed from superheroes, villains and fantasy worlds to create larger-than-life identities. Slick Rick’s elaborate jewelry, regal demeanor and storytelling abilities already resemble the ingredients of a comic book character. Nas, meanwhile, has spent his career constructing vivid narratives that turn everyday street experiences into something cinematic.

Greene’s challenge was translating those qualities into illustrations without losing what makes the artists recognizable.

Perhaps the most revealing moment came from Slick Rick, who viewed the collaboration through a broader cultural lens. Rather than focusing exclusively on his own legacy, the legendary MC spoke about nurturing Hip-Hop’s future and confronting the obstacles that threaten its growth.

For Greene, bringing these two rap icons into the same creative universe as the X-Men was clearly more than another assignment.

And for Nas, sharing that universe with one of his own heroes made the experience even more special.

The larger conversation connects to Legend Has It…, the Marvel and Mass Appeal comic series launched at New York Comic Con in October 2025. Written by Brandon Thomas and illustrated by Sanford Greene, the project reimagines Nas, Slick Rick, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Mobb Deep, Big L and De La Soul through superhero mythology.
