NWA approves concrete pavement for Seaview Drive in Lucea

HANOVER, Jamaica — Motorists travelling in and out of Lucea, Hanover, are set to benefit from improvements to Seaview Drive, following the signing of a $39-million contract by the National Works Agency (NWA) to rehabilitate a section of the roadway. Seaview Drive serves as a major corridor into Lucea for motorists travelling from the direction of Montego Bay, St James. The roadway has long been a source of frustration for commuters due to its low-lying location near the coastline, which makes it prone to flooding during periods of heavy rainfall and high wave activity. Community Relations Officer for the NWA’s Western Region, Janel Ricketts, said work is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 5, 2026. The project will target approximately 200 metres of roadway between the GV Service Station and D&G Hardware. According to Ricketts, the section will be rehabilitated using an eight-inch-thick rigid concrete pavement instead of the asphaltic concrete surface traditionally used along the roadway. She explained that while asphalt concrete had previously been used as the final surface, the NWA determined that rigid concrete would provide a more durable solution given the conditions affecting the roadway. The rehabilitation project is expected to take approximately four months to complete. Traffic changes will be implemented at various stages of the project, and motorists should expect some delays while work is underway. The NWA said measures will be put in place to minimise disruptions to commuters. Some aspects of the rehabilitation will also be carried out at night in an effort to reduce the impact on daytime traffic.
